Our tenth President, John Tyler, was the first US President to take office after the death of a sitting President. During his tenure the "Log-Cabin" bill enabled a settler to claim 160 acres of land before it was offered publicly for sale and Texas was annexed in 1845. In 1861, as the Civil War began, Tyler led a movement for compromise between North and South; failing, he then worked to create the Southern Confederacy. He died in 1862, a member of the Confederate House of Representatives.
