President Van Buren had the dubious honor of being head of state when the worst depression in US history to that date began. Over the course of five years, starting in 1837, hundreds of banks and businesses failed, and thousands lost their lands. Declaring that the depression was due to recklessness in business and overexpansion of credit, Van Buren worked for the duration of his presidency to maintain the solvency of the US government.
